Lewis L. Arnold Memorial Athletic Scholarship

Lewis Arnold loved sports his entire life.  His first team was at the age of 12 with the Starksons Stars baseball team in Palmdale. His mother told him “you will never amount to anything, all you want to do is chase a ball”.  He did - baseballs, basketballs, and footballs.  He played all three sports at Antelope Valley High School and at AV Jr. College.  In between, during summers, he played on any team he could find.
During his high school and college summers, he was Lifeguard and eventually Manager of the Courson Park Swimming Pool in Palmdale.  He gained his Underwater Instructor license and taught scuba diving along with swimming classes there.  An accomplished form diver, he was a member of the “Aquacades” doing dangerous stunts like the “horse and rider” dives to entertain thousands.
At AV Junior College, Lew was part of the All Conference Team that went on to be the first team to go to the Final Four in Basketball in 1953. 1953-54, in football, Lew held an Individual Rushing Record and was instrumental in wins for the Marauders as pass receiver and yards gained. In Baseball he was named All Conference.  Lew was a varsity Letterman in all 3 sports in both high school and college.
During this timeframe, Lew’s team played the famous Harlem Globetrotters twice.  When asked if his team ever beat them, he laughed and said “of course not”.
Lew went to California State University-Fresno on a Football Scholarship.  He gained his teaching credential and taught and coached from 1958-1990. His coaching career included basketball, baseball and football and was outstanding with several Golden League Championships and never a losing season. As a teacher and a beloved Coach, his character, integrity and competitive spirit instilled confidence and courage into thousands of young people.
Lewis Arnold was inducted into the Antelope Valley College Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Antelope Valley High School Hall of Fame in 2016 for his coaching accolades.
